Juggling will help you drive better!
A STUDY from the University of Oxford last week confirmed what Nimbin's Fred Forsyth has always known - that juggling improves brain function.
The study found learning to juggle improved connectivity within the part of the brain associated with fine movements.
Nimbin bus driver and tour guide Fred Forsyth, who rarely boards the Happy Coach without his juggling balls said, 'they've just spent thousands of dollars on a study to prove something I've always known'.
“When you are juggling you use your left-hand and your right hand equally - you're emotional and logical sides together,” he said.
Mr Forsyth also noted that the peripheral vision that was activated and honed by juggling also made you a better driver.
Learning to juggle leads to changes in the white matter of the brain, an Oxford University study has shown.
The research, funded by the Wellcome Trust and Medical Research Council and published in the journal Nature Neuroscience, appears to show improved connectivity in parts of the brain involved in making movements necessary to catch the balls.
‘We tend to think of the brain as being static, or even beginning to degenerate, once we reach adulthood,’ says Dr Heidi Johansen-Berg of the Department of Clinical Neurology, University of Oxford, who led the work. ‘In fact we find the structure of the brain is ripe for change. We’ve shown that it is possible for the brain to condition its own wiring system to operate more efficiently.’

The researchers at the Oxford Centre for Functional Magnetic Resonance Imaging of the Brain (FMRIB) set out to see if changes in the white matter of the brain could be seen in healthy adults on learning a new task or skill.
White matter consists of the bundles of long nerve fibres that conduct electrical signals between nerve cells and connect different parts of the brain together, while the grey matter consists of the nerve cell bodies where the processing and computation in the brain is done. Changes in grey matter following new experiences and learning have been shown. But enhancements in white matter have not previously been demonstrated.
We find the structure of the brain is ripe for change.
Dr Heidi Johansen-Berg Measuring changes in white matter relied on assessing diffusion MRI images using new methods pioneered by the FMRIB centre at Oxford. The methods are able to compare anatomical features of white matter between individuals or over time.
‘We have demonstrated that there are changes in the white matter of the brain – the bundles of nerve fibres that connect different parts of the brain – as a result of learning an entirely new skill,’ explains Dr Johansen-Berg.
A group of young healthy adults, none of whom could juggle, was divided into two groups each of 24 people. One of the groups was given weekly training sessions in juggling for six weeks and asked to practice 30 minutes every day. Both groups were scanned using diffusion MRI before and after the six-week period.
Juggler, postgraduate student at FMRIB, and first author on the paper, Jan Scholz (left), said: ‘We challenged half of the volunteers to learn to do something entirely new. After six weeks of juggling training, we saw changes in the white matter of this group compared to the others who had received no training. The changes were in regions of the brain which are involved in reaching and grasping in the periphery of vision, so that seems to make a lot of sense.’
After the training, there was a great variation in the ability of the volunteers to juggle. All could juggle three balls for at least two cascades, but some could juggle five balls and perform other tricks. All showed changes in white matter, however, suggesting this was down to the time spent training and practising rather than the level of skill attained.
‘This exciting new result raises a lot of questions,’ says Dr Johansen-Berg, ‘MRI is an indirect way to measure brain structure and so we cannot be sure exactly what is changing when these people learn. Future work should test whether these results reflect changes in the shape or number of nerve fibres, or growth of the insulating myelin sheath surrounding the fibres.’
Dr Johansen-Berg says: ‘Of course, this doesn’t mean that everyone should go out and start juggling to improve their brains. We chose juggling purely as a complex new skill for people to learn. But there is a ‘use it or lose it’ school of thought, in which any way of keeping the brain working is a good thing, such as going for a walk or doing a crossword.’
‘There are potential clinical applications of this work, although they are a long way off,’ adds Dr Johansen-Berg. ‘Knowing that pathways in the brain can be enhanced may be significant in the long run in coming up with new treatments for neurological diseases, such as multiple sclerosis, where these pathways become degraded.’

Why Britain's going mad for trampolines. Article by Stuart Jeffries of the Guardian
Everything else is going to hell, but trampoline sales are buoyant. "They're not cheap, but they're cheaper than foreign holidays and that's why everybody's buying trampolines for the garden during these harsh economic times," says a spokeswoman for the Stockport-based Trampoline Sales Ltd. But she would say that wouldn't she? John Lewis trampoline sales went up 55% last year and it expects them to rise even more this summer.
What's the appeal? "I love everything about trampolining," says Samantha House, 18, who bounces competitively for Great Britain. Trampolining improves posture, muscle tone, coordination and balance, and increases energy levels. It also stops your kids watching CBeebies.
Diversity, the dance troupe who won Britain's Got Talent, ascribe some of their success to their trampoline in Dagenham. "They're always on the garden trampoline," said a neighbour last week. "That's where they learned how to do backflips."
In their heyday Duran Duran reportedly cavorted with naked models on one, which is obviously sexist and wrong, but still. Have you ever caught your nipples in a trampoline spring? Bet it really hurts. Bob Dylan bought one for his kids during his Nashville Skyline era. The first version of Lay Lady Lay was called Bounce Lady Bounce (only kidding).
Trampolines are this summer's must-have. Even posh hotels such as The Ickworth in Suffolk have them so you can work off your stress at how much staying there costs. Happy days!
But here's a headline to ruin the dream of a long, hot bouncy summer: "Drunken trampoline shenanigans harming children". Doctors in Dundee have noticed an alarming rise in accidents caused by boozed-addled parents crushing their trampolining children. Andrew Bogacz of Ninewells Hospital wrote in the British Medical Journal last week: "Adults, please note that lager, wine, and trampolines do not mix." Well, that's my summer plans in tatters.
Latest figures from the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) show 11,500 hospital admissions a year after trampoline accidents. Some 80% of the injuries are caused by more than one person bouncing at the same time.
"The boom in trampolining has almost certainly led to an increase in accidents," says Peter Cornall, RoSPA's head of leisure safety, "but that does not mean parents should not buy trampolines for their children."
But which trampoline? An enclosed trampoline (£329 from Argos) may stop you and your little monsters hurtling into the hydrangeas. The Tent Trampoline (£49 for an 8ft model from gardengames.co.uk) is - in a very real sense - a tent on top of a trampoline and looks like a sleepover-turned-nighttime dash-to-casualty waiting to happen. And then there's the new Xtreme Bounce Board, which enables snowboarding nuts to practise their moves on a trampoline. For many of us, then, 2009 promises to be a blissful summer. For a few, though, it will end in plaster.

Health benefits of trampolining

Sally Wainman wrote to the Daily Telegraph in September 2008 to report as follows.
SIR I was pleased to see in your feature on autumn activities you informed readers that the 12 indoor disciplines of gymnastics including trampolining ''attract all ages into the seventies''.
I took up trampolining classes at 59 and am slowly working my way through the graded badges.
It is an incredible way of 'working out'
and acquiring new skills. I am hoping to celebrate my 60th birthday with another certificate which will be uplifting in every sense of the word! Sally Wainman PP

Perfect weather for trampolining! Bank holiday and autumn weather forecast
Britain will bask in an Indian summer with sunshine and high temperatures heading our way this autumn, forecasters said last night.
At long last good news about the weather. Reports of parents in Cornwall putting their children into wetsuits to trampoline in the rain are true- that happens in winter- but not in summer!
The country will enjoy some glorious sunshine after the wind and rain that has blighted the holiday season so far. Temperatures are expected to soar high into the 70s Fahrenheit next month, forecasters said yesterday. And the good weather is expected to arrive in time for this Bank Holiday weekend.
Our Jumpking trampoline had more use last winter as in this summer- strange but true- it must have been drier last winter?

Lu wins Gold for China in trampolining
Lu, the top qualifier to the eight-man final, scored 41.00 to take the gold medal. He was one of four finalists with a 16.20 difficulty level but he rose above the others with his superior execution scores.
The three medalists: Lu (C), Burnett (L) and Dong (Photo credit: Xinhua)
Seventh-placed qualifier Jason Burnett of Canada performed the highest level of difficulty (16.80) and earned the silver medal with a steady performance (40.70). Burnett's was the best Trampoline result by a Canadian man in Olympic history.
Dong Dong of China, who at age 19 was the youngest male competitor, won the bronze medal (40.60) for his clean routine. Dong, who qualified second to the final, placed second at the 2007 world championships. Lu's and Dong's medals were the first Trampoline medals for the Chinese men in Olympic history.
Sotomura Tetsuya of Japan and Athens 2004 gold medalist Yuriy Nikitin of Ukraine each scored 39.80 but Sotomura placed fourth based on his better execution scores.
A perfect fusion of athletics and aesthetics, Trampoline gymnastics ranks among the defining sports of the Olympic Games.
As of 1 January 1999, trampoline became a discipline of gymnastics at the Olympic Games.
Trampoline gymnastics debuted at the Sydney 2000 Games featuring both men's and women's individual events. The Russian Federation took home two gold medals at the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games as Alexander Moskalenko and Irina Karavaeva were crowned with gold medals.
With so many 'back yard' or Garden trampolines in the UK, GB must have a better chance in future of making a larger impact in this event.

The greatest trampolinist to date, Olympic Gold medalist Karavaeva
Trampoline gymnastics is a relative newcomer in the family of Olympic events, making its debut in the first Olympics of the century in Sydney. While a young Olympic discipline, it has a senior player in Irina Karavaeva, winner of the first-ever Olympic Gold medal for trampoline in 2000.
Before becoming an Olympic champion, this Russian gymnast had already won the World Championship title in 1994, 1998, and 1999. Her list of honors also included five World Cup Finals (1997, 1999, 2000, 2002, and 2004).
In 2001, after winning another individual World Championship, she learned that a mistake had been committed by the judges and voluntarily turned over the gold medal to silver medalist Anna Dogonadze (GER). In consolation Karavaeva was awarded a medal by the International Fair Play Committee.
At the 2004 Athens Olympics, the then European, World and Olympic champion failed to reach the final round of competition causing a sensation in the event. However, this setback did not deter her legendary career.
Karavaeva maintains the world record for highest degree of difficulty in women's trampoline. The Russian continues to challenge herself, most recently taking the bronze medal in the Spanish leg of the Trampoline World Cup on June 28.
